God Made An Athlete

by BigGeorge

On the eighth day, God looked down at the world he had created and saw that is was good.  He looked down upon the fields and the mountains, the streams and the oceans and saw they were good.  He looked down upon the fish of the sea and the creatures on the land and the foul in the sky and saw that they were good.  And God looked down at the humans he created in his own image and saw that they are faithful and hard-working, but they needed inspiration. So God created an athlete.

God said, I need someone who desires to run faster and jump higher than the average man, so God created an athlete.  God said, I need someone to get up with the sun and run for the sake of running, so God created an athlete.  God said I need someone who will climb a mountain not to get to the other side, but simply because it was there, so God made an athlete.  God said, I need someone who will pick up a rock or a branch and throw it as far as he can, not to kill an animal but just to throw it farther than the next man, so God created an athlete.

And God said, I need someone who other men can worship, not as gods, but because they show their full potential, so God made an athlete.  God said, I need someone who can throw a ball into a hoop with amazing accuracy and can run for hours without tiring, I need someone who can kick a ball into a net and get tackled and thrown to the ground and get up again, so God made an athlete.

God said, I need someone who can inspire other men to their full potential and stand up as an example to all men and women, so God made an athlete.  God said, I need someone to bring the nations and cities and towns together united in sport instead of wars where the spirit of achievement is exalted and humanity can see that every man can achieve more than they ever dreamed possible, to run faster, and swim harder and climb the highest mountain and throw farther than ever before, so God made an athlete.

God said, I need someone who can stand upon a pedestal and be adorned with gold and silver and bronze, and can have flowers thrown at him, a person who can be cheered and admired by both the men that walk the earth and the angels in heaven, but still at the end of the day drop humbly to their knees and thank me for these gifts, so God created an athlete.

And God said, I need someone who will lay his head to sleep and know with my blessing will rise the next day to run faster, swim harder and throw a stone harder not because they have to, because they want to.  So God created an athlete.  And it was done.
